Overview:

The Instrument Technician works under general supervision to sort, disassemble, clean, assemble, and sterilize instrumentation, scopes, and supplies. The technician initiates, supports, and enforces work efforts that maximize quality, safety and service while providing optimum customer service to all hospital departments and off-sites requiring sterile supplies.

Responsibilities:

• Manually sorts, disassembles, cleans and/or disinfect instruments, scopes and supplies by hand, washer-disinfector, ultrasonic, Steris I System (Steris), and cart washer. Loads sterilizers in prescribed manner, sets controls for specific time and temperature according to material and requirements of item being processed. Maintains assigned work areas and equipment in a clean, organized, and safe environment.

• Performs quality control on all instruments/scopes checking for visual damage, sharpness, cleanliness, and working condition. Send out for repairs or replace as necessary. Recommends ordering of new instruments as needed.

• Prepares surgical instrument sets and floor stock procedure trays according to MicroSystems Tracking System count sheets. Labels all instrument sets, peel-pouches, etc. Completes all daily production and quality control records.

• Demonstrates the ability to sterilize instruments, scopes, supplies, and linen using various types of sterilization processes – steam, Sterrad, ETO, and Steris. Wraps/packages/contains instruments for sterilization. Insures proper operation of sterilization units through daily quality control testing. Inspects steam, Sterrad and System One Steris for visible signs of malfunction and reports any malfunctions to manager.

• Fills requisitions and requests for case carts, instrumentation, and supplies in a timely manner. Communicates deficits in supplies or instruments for case carts to OR staff and specifies a time frame in this communication.

• Stocks surgical case cart area, processing, decontamination, and Materials Management shelving. Prioritizes production of surgical case cart, floor stock trays and miscellaneous supplies to assure that all customers have supplies in a timely manner.

• Demonstrates ability to flash instrumentation using proper technique.

• Contributes to department process improvements through routine evaluations of tasks, revisions of departmental procedures and implementation of change. Assists in training and orientation of co-workers.

Qualifications:

Education: High School Graduate.

Certifications:

• Certified Central Service Technician and/or have a Certificate of Completion from an accredited Surgical Scrub Technical program, preferred.

• All non-certified experienced technicians and technicians holding a Surgical Scrub Tech degree are strongly encouraged to become certified within one year of their hire date.

Skills:

• Ability to understand and apply standards of infection control.

• Ability to manage processes involving large amounts of detail.

• Excellent communication and troubleshooting skills.

• Demonstrated critical thinking skills concerning workflow and assignment.

Experience: 1 year of experience preferred.
