General Purpose of Position

The Police Crime Analyst performs strategic, tactical, and administrative management analysis of criminal activity data to predict the time and place that criminal activity may occur through the robust use of proprietary and creative databases to identify criminals and suspects, identify immediate and high-level threats, support the efficient deployment of law enforcement resources, and administrative support. The Crime Analyst also supplies department staff, Bureau Commanders and the Chief of Police with additional specialized information and reports related to crime analysis.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Analyze crime information, statistical data, reports, and other source documents from Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies.

Coordinate with investigative units to resolve current and closed investigations by defining relationships with or to specific crimes or individuals.

Collect, analyze, and interpret data received from various departmental databases and other law enforcement agencies.

Perform statistical calculations to compile and summarize criminal activities.

Use databases for the completion of daily, weekly, monthly, etc. reports as well as ad hoc analyses with an emphasis on data visualization.

Research and monitor developing crime trends throughout the region.

Analyze criminal activity and identifies patterns of crime using database software and reviewing incident data.

Proactively provide recommendations and advice regarding criminal activity patterns.

Provides statistical retrieval and analysis for community meetings or requests from the Chief of Police or his designee.

Prepare and insert into maps, charts, graphs, and written reports crime data as may apply to specific crimes by area.

Identify, gather and share new analytics methodologies, techniques, industry trends, and technologies and their potential application to the Police Department.

Performs all other duties and projects as directed.

Requirements

Education and Experience

The person in this position must have a minimum of an Associates degree or 64 hours of college, preferably emphasizing Social Science, Criminal Justice, Statistics, Research Methodology, Computer Science or related field. 1-3 years of experience in conducting complex statistical analysis (time series analysis, trend projections, regression, correlation and analysis of variance). Law enforcement experience in this field is preferred.
