JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Engineering Manager, the Metrex Chemical Engineer will focus on the design and development of chemical manufacturing methods and processes. The person in this position routinely applies knowledge of chemical engineering, chemistry and systems engineering principles to the design of materials conversion processes to manufacture chemical and related products. This position designs individual pieces of chemical manufacturing equipment, integrated conversion processes and test equipment where both theoretical and practical knowledge of chemical manufacturing methods and techniques are required. The incumbent must have practical knowledge of batch processing.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for designing, installing, and commissioning new processing methods, monitoring process development, chemical processing equipment modifications/upgrades and troubleshooting existing processes.

Identifies and addresses non-conformances in an FDA and EPA regulated medical device facility.

Develops safety procedures to be employed by workers operating equipment or working in close proximity to on-going chemical operations.

Prepares reports, flow diagrams and charts.

Manages the costs and time constraints of chemical and process engineering projects.

Supports the conversion of small-scale processes into commercially viable large-scale operations.

Assumes responsibility for risk assessment, necessitating hazard and operability studies, for health and safety of staff.

Monitors and improves the efficiency, output, statistical process capability and safety of a chemical operation or system.

Makes observations and takes measurements directly, as well as collects and interprets data from the other technical and operating staff involved.

Works closely with other specialists including chemists and material scientists responsible for the selection and processing of raw materials, intermediates, and finished products.

Monitors process equipment to identify potential reliability or production issues and develops systems solutions to eliminate the reoccurrence of those issues.

Continually researches to find new and less expensive methods to be used in processing to reduce lead time and increase product value.

Designs measurement and control systems for chemical plants based on data collected in laboratory experiments and in pilot plant operations.

Directs activities of workers who operate or who are engaged in constructing and improving process equipment.

Estimates sizes, distances, and quantities; or determines time, costs, resources or materials needed to perform a work activity.

Job Requirements:

Undergraduate degree in Chemical and/or Process Engineering required.

2+ years of Chemical Processing experience OR 1 year of experience with a Master's degree.

Understanding of process equipment design, including pumps, piping, storage tanks, and material balances.

Must be knowledgeable in the proper handling of chemicals and waste, both hazardous and non-hazardous, as defined by FDA, OSHA, EPA and DOT.

Ability to take ownership if process and drive results.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience in a batch chemical processing environment preferred.

Medical device, Pharmaceutical, Healthcare & Food industry experience, preferred.

Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

General understanding of lab testing.

Validation experience is a plus.

Previous DCS or PLC experience is a plus.

PSM experience is a plus.

Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

Highly proficient in all facets of Microsoft Office (including Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word and Access) and Microsoft Project.

Basic skills with AutoCAD would be beneficial.
