Highly responsible Police supervisor. Extensive experience in directing and supervising employees in investigative activities or responsible police work in the performance of specialized and technical police functions. Incumbent is responsible for the conducting Internal Affairs investigations.

Internal Affairs Police Captain Position Overview: As a Professional Compliance Unit, Internal Affairs Police Captain, incumbent will hold a crucial role within the police department, responsible for overseeing and managing the Internal Affairs Division. Primary responsibility is to ensure that the department and its officers adhere to professional standards, ethical conduct, and legal protocols. Incumbent will investigate and address any allegations of misconduct, violations, or complaints lodged against police personnel. Additionally, incumbent will play a vital role in maintaining the public's trust and confidence in the police department by promoting transparency and accountability.

This administrative position supervises Police Sergeants Staff supervision; directly supervises Sergeants, unit and /or section leaders. May serve as a division commander; supervise and may conduct departmental inspections to determine the efficiency and effectiveness of departmental policies and procedures. Through the chain of command incumbent is responsible for the supervision of all subordinate employees in the division. Assists the Chief of Police and Assistant Chief of Police as required in all phases of the departments regarding professional compliance and investigative procedures. Reviews the work of subordinate officers and implements procedures and policies to increase police effectiveness.

Criminal Investigations Captain Overview; in addition to internal affairs investigations, incumbent will also supervise criminal investigations within the department.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Leadership and Management: - Lead and manage the internal affairs division, providing guidance, support, and direction to the investigative team.

2. Internal Affairs Investigations: - Receive and review complaints, allegations, or reports of misconduct against police personnel. - Conduct thorough and impartial investigations into alleged violations, utilizing appropriate investigative techniques and resources. - Interview witnesses, gather evidence, and document findings to determine the validity of complaints. - Maintain confidentiality and protect the rights of all parties involved in investigations.

3. Criminal Investigations: - Supervise and oversee criminal investigations conducted by detectives within the police department.

4. Disciplinary Processes: - Recommend appropriate disciplinary actions or corrective measures based on investigation outcomes and departmental policies.

5. Training and Education: - Develop and deliver training programs to enhance awareness of departmental policies, professional standards, and legal obligations. - Provide guidance and education to police personnel regarding ethical conduct, use of force, and other relevant areas. - Stay updated on evolving laws, regulations, and best practices related to internal affairs and criminal investigations.

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or a related field. Advanced degrees are advantageous.
