Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) is a set of principles and practices that incorporates aspects of software engineering and applies them to IT infrastructure and operations. The main objectives are to create highly reliable and scalable software systems and automate operational processes. SREs focus on availability, latency, performance, efficiency, change management, monitoring, emergency response and capacity planning of their services.

As an Application Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) you will be part of team of people who are responsible for the availability of several of Discover’s most critical applications: our PULSE network authorization switch and settlement platforms. You’ll tap into your passion for ensuring these applications are highly available for our customers.

Responsibilities

Creates technology solutions addressing high impact business priorities. Demonstrates the ability to analyze, design, code, test and deploy solutions and product features with high quality to production. Level of technical expertise enables solutions with high complexity and depth.

Competent in multiple contexts, including programming languages, security, automation, testing, and business domains and is the go-to person for many people (inside and outside of their team)

Participates in strategic technology decisions and learns how these decisions impact Discover as a whole

Proactively identifies and mitigates issues based on intuition and experience in multiple domains. Is a thought leader amongst team members and drives problem solving to determine root cause.

Coaches' technology communities at Discover in areas of specific technology domain, design-thinking, agile software development way of working, security, architecture and/or data engineering.

Consult teams and provide hands-on training to teams in observability, incident management and reliability best practices.

Includes defining SLOs\SLAs\SLIs, on-call support behaviors, troubleshooting, building support playbooks, implementing monitoring and alerting, logging standards

Review product journeys and reliability practices on regular interval to enforce best practices.

Lead failure point discussions, chaos testing and family level capacity management.

Responsible for application reliability and resiliency

Leverage metrics and scorecards to better drive site reliability adoption

Ensure delivery teams in the product family track and meet annual operational goals (MTTR reduction, incident reduction, platform availability, SLO\SLA targets)

Ensure the proper level of documentation exists, is maintained, and reviewed regularly

Drive SRE community discussions

Participate in an on call rotation

Minimum Qualifications

At a minimum, here’s what we need from you:

Bachelors – Computer Science or related

6+ Years -- Information Technology, (Software) Engineering, or related

Internal applicants only: technical proficiency rating of proficient on the Dreyfus engineering scale

Preferred Qualifications

Bonus Points If You Have:

Understanding of payments transaction processing switch on HPE NonStop fault-tolerant platform.

Develop large and complex solutions for online transaction processing using Connex Environmental Database (CED).

Have knowledge of Processor Interface and foundational knowledge of Connex Advantage.

Involved in analysis, design, coding, and testing of various Connex module components.

3+ years in a SRE or DevOps role

Experience with DevOps tools, processes, and culture

Extensive experience leading customer facing systems in a mission critical environment

Advanced experience with programming and/or scripting languages (TAL, TACL, C, C++, Cobol 85, Python, Java, bash)

Extensive experience with monitoring and observability tools/technologies (i.e., Prognosis, Web ViewPoint, Grafana, Kibana, Datadog, AppDynamics)

Creation of standardized monitoring dashboards in cloud platforms for proactive monitoring of application and infrastructure health

In-depth knowledge of Non-functional requirements (NFR’s) including pressure/chaos testing, performance, and penetration testing

Operational Readiness strategies and best practices

Compensation:The base pay for this position generally ranges between $104,000.00 to $175,600.00. Additional incentives may be provided as part of a market competitive total compensation package. Factors, such as but not limited to, geographical location, relevant experience, education, and skill level may impact the pay for this position.
